Backlash Fanzine
Splitter är tillbaka och den här gången smäller det rejält! Grabbarna har klivit in hos Studio Fredman i GBG och ut kommer elva proffsinspelade låtar som piskar på utav bara helvete.

Enligt bandet själva sattes skiten på två tagningar & med en folköl. Gästsång av bl.a. Wallenberg. Det enda man kan anmärka på när det gäller ljudet är att trummorna ligger lite för långt bak i ljudbilden. Det irriterar lite & jag får vatten på min kvarn när jag lyssnar på låt 12-18 som är Splitters första demo "Stundens Chockerande Intryck". Där är ljudbilden lite luftigare & trummorna mer distinkta. Nåväl, "En Sorlig Historia" är just ingen sådan utan en förbannat bra grindcoreplatta där man som sagt får deras första demo på köpet. Jag hade inte hört den innan och jag måste säga att jag faktiskt gillar den minst lika mycket som deras andra demo "Vardagsångest" (se recension i Backlash # 15 eller på www.backlash.se).

Texterna är riktigt bra och jag tänker fan inte berätta vad dom handlar om utan lyft på arslet & beställ ett eget ex av plattan istället. Det kommer du garanterat inte ångra.

Well damn, I sure as hell didn’t expect this. What we have here is a superbly executed display of top-notch socio-political grindcore from none other than Sweden. It’s actually rather astounding to see how much of an impressive maelstrom of disaster Splitter can create considering their relatively short spanning career. It is extremely rare to see this much maturity displayed so effectively and so precisely, but Splitter have managed to release a contender for the paramount grindcore record of the year with En Sorglig Historia (A Sad Story).

The crisp and tightly wound Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Opeth) production has that superb wall of sound approach, but there’s something amiss in the mix of frequencies that throws the album off from its possible excellence. Could be that while the guitars and vocals are brought out with an extremely lucid and defined clarity, the drums are all but neglected into a slightly muddled afterthought in the background that does a great disservice to drummer Oskar’s ability to create a driving pace that carries each song with a vicious grace. The dual attack of vocalist Fredrik’s monstrous lows and fiercely abrasive highs lend Splitter a certain intrinsic level of dynamic tension and poignant intensity that is only expounded further by the well detailed and semi intricate layering of the guitarists Niklas and Thimmy’s superb ability to play the right riff at the right time with an overall excellent detail to timing.

Splitter may not be the grittiest, or the most blisteringly schizophrenic of the grindcore lot, but what really puts them ahead of the majority of the pack is their ability to offer through finesse. Their distinct style of Swedish tragedy grind offers what most grindcore acts fail to offer, substance. Rather than the simple convoluted riff fest most albums like this descend into, En Sorglig Historia is a coherent, unified musical vision featuring a universal level of quality and devastating level of variety and contrast within and between songs that merges into one of the catchiest damn results I’ve ever heard. Songs like the compelling “Krossad” and “Tack och adjö” utilize an unprecedented amount of melodic tendencies that counter the undiluted grindcore rancor of songs like “Haveri” and the nearly death metal brutality found on numbers like “Status”. The infectious groove found on “Tidsinställd Kollaps” finds its way into every song belying a rare talent at offering truly memorable moments of grandeur. Though Splitter do diverge their style on occasion, normally their amalgam of grindcore finds itself comfortably nestled in the tendency of songs like the dark “Välfärd/Likfärd”, the particularly wrathful “Situation Stockholm Kapitel 2”, the ferocious powerful “Stackars Generation” and “Landets Blinda Undergång” to fuse their multifaceted approach into a particular l ethal combination of styles. Intense doesn’t begin to describe the experience.

As per many of their releases, Obscene Productions has offered Splitter’s 2004 Stundens Chockerande Intryck demo as a bonus. It’s about 11 minutes more of Splitter, which can’t exactly be a bad thing (at the very least it’s an interesting retrospective tacked on). However, amongst a few problems, Studens Chockerande is marred with an annoyingly bad production. I’ve honestly heard half rate bootleg albums with more presence and oomph to them. Granted, there is a decent level of coherency to each instrument, but the frequencies and tones are all sorts of fucked up, seriously reducing the level of enjoyability. Also, the overall quality of the material is heavily reduced in comparison with their other work. The compositions fail to really deliver much more than an ambitious strive to break out of slightly amateurish songwriting and lackluster musicianship. My advice: Stick with their similarly impressive 2005 Vardagsangest release if you’re looking for something comparable or if you find your need for more high quality grind courtesy of Splitter insatiable, much like En Sorglig Historia, it’s one hell of a record.

En Sorglig Historia is an excellent album that easily contends with the heavy hitters of the genre in a rather equitable fashion. However, despite the top-notch songwriting and fairly distinctive delivery, musically speaking, Splitter doesn’t exactly tread any uncharted territory or exhibit a particularly unique vision separate from the direction of their music. They may not be the best band for originality so to speak, but what they do with their multifarious style is nothing short of prodigious. Though the skill level is undeniably solid, they never manage to expand the styles of grindcore they interfuse into their sound in any revolutionary way. Either way you fall on creativity v. ability, Splitter is a band that will appeal immensely to various components of the grind community and will quite expectedly manage to win a few converts with the undeniable gravity of their ability. Yet another success for Obscene Productions.

Splitter are one of several productive and qualitative grindcore acts that has been blasting away in the Swedish underground for a couple of years now. Some are still doing demos and others have gotten one step further. Splitter are of the latter and are one this CD proudly showing us what they can do on eleven blistering tracks of grinding mayhem. Also included as a bonus is their great demo "Stundens Chockerande Intryck". So even though "En Sorlig Historia" is a MCD it all together has a running time of twenty-seven minutes. And I enjoy every single one.

If you've heard Splitter before you know to expect raging and brutal grindcore, now with an even more chaotic touch added. If you haven't heard them before, you know now what to expect - and why you should get this if explosive (Swedish) grind is something you fancy. And just like so much else recorded at Studio Fredman the sound quality is great.

Lyrically Splitter are intelligent and political, taking up issues like homelessness, anxiety, being left out, the tempo of daily life getting faster and faster and the state not caring about the physical and psychological well being of its citizens.

Face Your Underground Zine
HELL YEAH! That’s what first came to mind when I heard ‘En Sorglig Historia’ from our Swedish grindcore friends Splitter.

Splitter is a new band, formed around Christmas 2003 and today they’re presenting their second MCD and it has to be said, it’s fucking killer! It’s been a while since I heard such a whirlwind of grindcore passing by. That’s best how to describe Splitter, a whirlwind.

The 11 tracks are played on high speed tempo and combine brutality with some melody, but without losing aggression. It is devastating. The double vocals, the blast beats, shredding guitars, … everything sounds ultra tight. Of course a decent production is obligated, otherwise everything would turn into a mess, which would be a pity, but Splitter has it all!

And as an extra the band included the previous MCD (which sounds a bit less profession but still kicks arse) to the new MCD as well (on the same disc though) so you get 2 for the price of 1, or 27 minutes of pure pleasure. If you’re into grind, this is an absolute must have and one of my top 10 releases of this year for sure!

Und mal wieder feiner Grindcore aus schwedischen Gefilden in Form von SPLITTER, die mir bis zu dieser Scheibe vollkommen unbekannt waren.

Geboten wir aus allen möglichen Grindcore Richtungen. Einerseits klingen die Herren etwas nach NASUM, andererseits sind sie aber auch viel rotziger und schneller. Hier wird das komplette Paket von noisigen Gitarren, über Blasts, fast schon atmosphärischen Parts bis hin zum feinen Geballer geboten und sollte somit eigentlich Leuten gefallen die auf Bands wie NASUM, die Ami Grind/HC-Schiene oder auch Bands wie WOJZCECH oder TschechenGrind stehen.

Neben offiziellen elf Tracks, an denen ich wirklich kaum was zu meckern habe, haben SPLITTER die Scheibe noch mit den sieben Tracks des 04er Demos „Stundens Chockerande Intryck“ angereichert, die zwar musikalischer kaum abfallen sind, aber sich auf der anderen Seite einfach nur nach 'ner schlechten Aufnahme der neuen Songs anhört. Trotzdem ein feines Teil!!! Punkte: 8,5 (lt)

Die hübsche Frau auf dem Cover des Debüts der neuen schwedischen Grindcore-Bastarde von SPLITTER weint bittere Bluttränen aus weißen Augen, dazu trägt sie einen altmodischen Revolver. Eigentlich muss sie keinen Grund zur Trauer haben. Denn diese Schweden lärmen auf "En Sorglig Historia" erfrischend fröhlich in der Tradition der unvergessenen NASUM: Vielleicht nicht immer ganz so progressiv, aber mit dem selben energetischen Impuls, aus dem echte Aggressionen entstehen. Die fünf Skandinavier klingen äußerst angepisst von dieser Welt – besonders Sänger Fredrik Thalberg schreit äußerst giftig, ohne Punkt und Komma, ohne Achtung vor seinen malträtierten Stimmbändern. Die Texte – sowieso unverständlich – sind komplett in schwedisch, dafür stehen immer die englischen Erklärungen drunter. In dem fetten Smasher 'Välfärd/Likfärd', der durch SKITSYSTEM-Schreihals Fredrik Wallenberg kräftige Unterstützung erhält, beschäftigen sich SPLITTER zum Beispiel mit der schwedischen Wirtschaft: "The swedish industry emigrates to countries with cheaper labour. The power moves to Bruxelles, in the hands of people that is supposed to know what's the best for us. How is this suppose to strengthen our welfare?", fragen sie anklagend in leicht holprigem Englisch.

Natürlich, SPLITTER sind eine linke Band. Das macht aber nichts, NAPALM DEATH sind das auch. Und genau wie die Jungs aus GB klingt auch die alles zermalmende Wut des SPLITTER-Quintetts ehrlich, kommt aus dem Bauch heraus und hat im renommierten Fredman-Studio den nötigen Feinschliff im Sound bekommen. Nur gegen Ende der 25-minütigen Mini-CD schwächeln die Schweden ein wenig. Denn da haben sie noch ihr Demo "Studens Chockerande Intryck" auf die CD gepackt, das mit einem räudig-schwachen Sound nur sehr undifferenziert erahnen lässt, welche großartigen Talente in diesen sicken Musikern stecken. Schade, hier wäre eine neue Aufnahme der alten Songs wohl sinnvoller gewesen. Denn so bleibt natürlich das Ende von "En Sorglig Historia" eher verhalten – ganz anders eben als die Stücke zu Beginn. Da klingen grandiose Hass-Klopper wie 'Tidsinställd Kollaps' in ihrer Wut druckvoll, mächtig – eben einfach saucool nach nordischem Grindcore-Feeling. Abgesehen von diesem Malus sind SPLITTER aber eine grandiose Band, die ihren Grindcore so dermaßen brutal abzieht, dass Entkommen kaum möglich ist: Denn eigentlich ist jeder der aktuellen Songs ein Treffer in die Schnauze, wenn auch der Schlag jeweils grindcoretypisch zeitlich kürzer ausfällt. Dafür aber wirken SPLITTER umso präziser. Eben wie ein Bombensplitter. Starke Leistung.

My Last Chapter
In all honesty I’m a little bit disappointed by this CD. I love the two older recordings by Splitter, and so I was expecting this to be even more ear-bleeding since it’s recorded in the renowned Studio Fredman (At The Gates, Opeth, Haunted, Lord Belial etc etc). And I absolutely adore the thick and full sound that both Driller Killer and Wolfpack have experienced in the very same studio. But the sound on En Sorglig Historia bugs me… The vocals are too low in the mix, which doesn’t let the full brutality of Thalberg’s bone-shattering shrieks shine through. And the drums can sometimes just be a murky banging in the background.

But if we put the sound-issue aside this is a really great CD. Totally raging grindcore, varying from crusty bits to a full-on death metal slamming to just pure grinding. And we’re also served some guestvocals by Fredrik Wallenberg (Skitsystem) and Manne (Degrade), and especially the latter one adds a completely new dimension to the music. And as we all already know, Fredrik Thalberg possess one of the fiercest screaming known to mankind, so the album’s full of masterful vocals. Intricate riffing, adding both brutality and melody to the tunes, and a heavy-as-fuck wall of sound (although annoying, as explained earlier). We get socio-political lyrics in Swedish, but with English explanations to ‘em of course. But we can also find some seriously anguish filled lyrics here. Just take Situation Stockholm, kapitel 2, which describes the life of a cold and hungry human being, completely alone and absolutely set-aside from peoples conscience, left to rot in the subway. I’d like to think I’m pretty hardened from all political and gory lyrics, but this really affects me.

I’m a bit split here; don’t really know how to judge this… So freakin’ mind-blowing, but still a tad annoying when it comes to the sound… I’d advise you to check it out and take a listen and judge for yourself. The CD also contains Splitter’s old demo Stundens Chockerande Intryck as a bonus. I’ve already reviewed that one, so I won’t bother doing so once more, but instead I’d tell you to read the old review of it.

Rise And Subvert webzine
Finally a new release from Splitter. I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time since I loved their MCD "Vardagsångest" that was released in 2005.

This release is even darker and more chaotic than "Vardagsångest" but in a very suiting way. They have managed to creat their own distinct sound by now and the songs are very well thought through. A few of Splitters many strenghts is their lyrics along with the vocals. Very intelligent and well written lyrics with a clear political message in every song. My favourites on this record is "Krossad", "Välfärd/Likfärd", "Situation Stockholm, Kapitel 2" and "En plats för alla".

Splitter have brought some guests to the studio this time. Fredrik Wallenberg from Skitsystem and Manne from Degrade appears on 2 songs. Also added to this release is Splitters demo "Stundens chockerande intryck" from 2004. This could be one of this years best grind-albums, no doubt about that.

Hier haben wir eine neue Grindcore Sensation aus Schweden, die in 27 Minuten 18 Songs unbarmherziger Härte auf uns niederprasseln lassen.

Sänger Fredrik Thalberg keift die Songs, die alle in schwedisch sind, voller Aggression ins Mikro und die Gitarristen Thimmy Broden und Niklas Holm zermürben uns mit ihren Wahnsinns Riffs.

Drummer Oscar Pihl Hedberg verdrischt die Felle in einer Art und Weise, dass einem die Lauscher klingeln. Aber die Songs werden nicht nur lieblos so dahergeprügelt, die Jungs bauen immer wieder geschickte Breaks ein und so kommt ein Song wie "Status" auch mal ein wenig technisch rüber. Aber im Großteil regiert der pure Grind in seiner besten Form. Pfeilschnelle Songs, die immer nur kurz mal gebremst werden, aber nur, um dann wieder abzugehen wie die Sau. Wahnsinn, was die Jungs hier schon zu bieten haben, gibt es die Band doch erst seit 2003. Sänger Fredrik kann aber auch anders, so setzt er bei "Tack Och Adjö" ab und zu mal auf richtig bedrohliche Growls und wechselt bei diesem Song dann wieder in saustarkes Gekeife.

Aber Splitter haben diese EP nicht nur mit ihren 11 neuen Songs versehen, sondern haben als Bonus noch ihr komplettes Demo "Stundens Chockerande Intryck" mit draufgepackt. Von diesem Demo aus dem Jahre 2004 bekommen wir sieben Stücke zu hören, die zwar im Sound extrem dumpf, aber voller Härte sind und da schon zeigen, wo Bartels den Most holt. Zwar etwas leise aufgenommen, aber die Snare batscht da wie die Sau, was mir pesönlich ja sehr gut gefällt. Auch fällt auf, dass Splitter nicht immer nur schrubben, sondern es sind immer wieder mal ein paar klassische Death Metal Riffs zu vernehmen, die rasant und düster auf einen einwirken.

Auf jeden Fall ist die Grindcore Szene mit Splitter um eine super Band reicher geworden, die mit ihrem absoluten Turbo Speed Grindcore mit Sicherheit in Zukunft noch für Aufsehen sorgen wird.

Der Anfang ist gemacht und jeder sollte sich dieses Teil reinpfeifen und diese phantastische Frische und Härte auf sich wirken lassen.

Splitter - to je mrda rovnou mezi satelity!!! Grind core v jeho nejryzejší form? a podob?. Tento "neš?astný p?íb?h" ?ítá jedenáct song?, k n?muž je jako bonus p?ilepen jejich p?edešlý po?in "Stundens Chockerande Intryck" LP 2004, takže tu máme vlastn? dv? MCD na jedný placce. Hned úvodní skladba Vás praští p?ímo do xichtu a okamžit? víte s ?ím máte to do?in?ní. Surovej výpal, kterej mi místy p?ípomíná doby, kdy jsem slyšel poprvé desku Inhale/Exhale božských NASUM. U týhle sme?ky bych ale ?ekl, že více používají zvoln?ní, po kterém nutn? musí p?ijít ona nenávistná, vztekuplná a nasraná fofrova?ka a to je p?esn? to, co m? dostává do kolen a nutí rejdit držkou po koberci, uááááá. Velice sympatická stopáž skladeb, z nichž ani jedna nejde p?es dv? minuty dává jasn? na srozum?nou, že na n?jaký mazlení tady není ?as, hust? do lidí, jen co se do nich vejde!!!

Co se textové nápln? tý?e, tak p?edpokládám, že i v?tšina z vás prost? švédsky neumí, ale z anglických popisk? lze pom?rn? snadno usoudit, že Splitter mají spadeno na všechny dnešní nešvary: od problém? s nezam?stnaností, bezdomovci ?i v jakém stavu zanecháme planetu svým d?tem!!! Myslím, že k dotvo?ení p?edstavy je to dosta?ující. Jak již jsem zmínil, k tomuto po?inu je na CD p?idána i p?edešlá nahrávka "Stundens Chockerande Intryck", která bohužel nemá tak odpovídající zvuk jako mladší sourozenec, na druhou stranu to lehce vy?eší volume doprava. Obsahov? je to skoro stejné jako u nov?jšího po?inu, jen mi malinko schází ten feeling nasranosti, ale možná to je tím zvukem. Co ?ící záv?rem? Švédská škola grindu je u Splitteru cítit na sto hon? a nau?ili se to opravdu dob?e, m?l jsem malinko potíže s tím, jak ohodnotit tuhle desku, protože MCD z roku 2004 je zde jako bonus a spíše k seznámení s d?ív?jší tvorbou t?lesa, takže hodnotím pouze první ?ást týhle grindující fošny.

SPLITTER könnte ein neues Synonym für „brutal“ werden. der Schwedenhaufen geht auf seiner dritten EP dermaßen brachial zu Werke, dass kein Stein auf dem anderen bleibt. In nicht einmal einer halbten Stunden ballern SPLITTER 18 Tracks runter, die in bester NASUM-Manier stehen und bei aller Heftigkeit sehr abwechslungsreich ist (die Jungs haben sogar das Kunstück geschafft, Mid-Tempo-Grind zu spielen) und niemals einen gewissen Groove vermissen lässt, was selbst Brachialsongs wie „Landets Blinda Undergang“hörbar macht. Alle Lyrics auf schwedisch ist eh klar, oder? Ist beim Gesang aber auch egal, da versteht man ehj’ nix von den (durchaus sozialkritischen) Texten, sondern konzentriert sich auf die Wut und Anpissheit, die der Mikrosklave versprüht. Seine Gitarristen konzentrieren sich derweil auf effektives Grind-Geschrubbe oder bauen mal einen kleinen Melodie-Part ein, w ährend der Drummer eigentlich immer auf den Blastpart wartet. Ergibt eine arschgeile Grindplatte, die en par mit der neuen GADGET ist.
